Nest of three triangular tables with rounded beveled edges. Birch tops, cold rolled steel legs. Designed by Joseph Carreiro and produced by Pine and Baker of Cambridge, MA, c. 1950. A native of Cambridge, Carreiro studied at the Massachusetts School of Art, at Cranbrook, and at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He was a long-term instructor at the Cornell Department of Housing and Design as well as a designer and design consultant. Carreiro's work for Pine and Baker was recognized extensively in the early postwar design literature. It was also included in the groundbreaking Design Since 1945 show at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1984. The present design received an Honorable Mention award form the American Institute of Decorators in a 1950 competition. This is an extremely rare complete set, in lightly refurbished original condition. Measurements are of the largest table; the middle one measures W 37" x D 22.5" x H 14.25"; the smallest measures W 26.5" x D 16.75" x H 13".
Condition
Good. Good original condition with only light refurbishing. Wear consistent with age apparent in tops, which have a deep patina. Steel legs in fine shape; blackened edges have been touched up. See photos.
