Gerald Luss Cabinet for Carrom Industries
Gerald Luss Cabinet for Carrom Industries
$8,500
United States
circa 1951
Case with five drawers and a cabinet of cherry-stained wood with faux-grain plastic laminate top and facings, curved steel drop pulls, steel angle-iron legs, and a perforated transite bottom panel. Designed by Gerald Luss in 1951 for private rooms in the Mt. Sinai Hospital in Detroit and subsequently produced in small numbers by Carrom Industries. Luss remains an under-appreciated figure whose career in commercial and residential design spanned the early 1950’s to the present. He famously designed interiors for the Time-Life Building, the model (and location) for the Mad Men office sets. His furniture designs for hospital projects, intended to be flexible, durable, modular, hygienic, easily cleanable, and affordable, were featured in George Nelson’s Storage book and in a spread Nelson edited for Interiors magazine.
Condition
General wear throughout consistent with age and use. The cherry-stained wood has been lightly refurbished.
