Unique Elaine Lustig Cohen Cabinet
Unique Elaine Lustig Cohen Cabinet
$15,000
American
circa 1961
Two-piece custom cabinet of birch with black-and-white lacquered fronts, designed by renowned artist and graphic designer Elaine Lustig Cohen (1927-2016) in 1961 for her own townhouse on the Upper East Side in New York City, where it remained until 2018. The simple but graphically powerful design reflects Lustig-Cohen’s own aesthetic, filtered through the lens of her first husband, the polymath Alvin Lustig (1915-1955). The right side of the cabinet sports a pair of black-lacquered doors that open and slide inward, revealing an open space that could accommodate a television or a hi-fi system. The two-piece composition screws together inside, and cannot be split apart as the abutting sides are not finished.Provenance: the estate of Elaine Lustig Cohen
Condition
The cabinet has been cleaned and polished, with a few touch-ups, but is otherwise in quite good original condition with only minor wear consistent with age and use.
