Arthur Collani Plywood "Modern" Chair (HOLD)
$3,250 (HOLD)
United States
circa 1955
Three-legged "Modern" chair in cut Douglas Fir plywood. A home construction project, based on a pattern by Arthur Collani, whose designs appeared in Home Craftsman Magazine in the early 1950's. Readers were provided with schematic drawings, written instructions, and pictures of the finished product. This Organic Design chair, with its biomorphic mien and frank use of materials, captures the spirit of the early postwar do-it-yourself movement that helped increase awareness of modernist "Good Design" in America. A relatively rough-hewn and humble example of what was one of the most striking DIY forms of the time.
