Paul Evans Studio Coffee Table with Welded Steel Base and Elliptical Slate Table (SOLD)

$25,000.00

United States
circa 1965

A rare Paul Evans coffee table with an elliptical slate top and a welded and patinated steel base, produced by Paul Evans Studio circa 1965. The base, with its arched cruciform shape, has an almost bridge-like architectural bearing. The heavy slate top rests on the base and slots onto four pins attached to tabs extending inward from the "legs." Unmarked, as most of only a handful of similar tables known to the market. For a close analog, see Rago Auction 27 October 2007, lot 394. Provenance: Per family history, the table was purchased for a modernist residence in Mamaraneck, NY from America House in New York City in about 1965 (see in situ photo). America House, located across the street from MoMA from 1956-1971, was a retail venue established to promote and support the work of contemporary artist-craftspeople in the United States. Paul Evans's work was featured on the covers of several of its catalogs. Thence by descent.

Condition
Remarkably good overall condition with only minor wear to the slate and steel. The slate has been cleaned and oiled. One tab on the base is slightly bent but with no visual or structural impact.
